‘Absolute horror’: Sheep shot on Suffolk rare breeds farm

A Suffolk rare breeds farm has experienced an “absolute horror” after one of its sheep was shot.

Baylham House Rare Breeds Farm has confirmed that one of its Llanwenog sheep was shot on Sunday, September 29. 

The farm located in Mid Suffolk posted on its social media: “To our absolute horror, one of our sheep has been shot! The police have been informed.  

“She is doing ok considering and has been given pain relief, antibiotics and cleaned up. She will remain under close observation.  

“The rest of the herd are showing no signs of injury but are clearly uneasy as we cannot get anywhere near them when usually they’ll come over.

“If anyone local to us sees or hears of anything to do with sheep worrying please let us know.”

Investigation launched 

Baylham House Rare Breeds Farm issued an update yesterday, saying that the sheep is doing well. 

“We are amazed she is still standing given her injuries. More pain relief has been given and she’s enjoyed some fresh hay,” the farm owners added. 

A spokesperson for Suffolk police said: “An investigation has been launched by Suffolk police’s Rural Crime Team after a sheep was injured in a morning shooting by an unknown suspect on Sunday, September 29. 

“Anyone with information should contact us using crime reference 37/55631/24.”

The latest figures published by NFU Mutual have shown that rural crime cost the UK an estimated £52.8m in 2023, compared to £50.6m from the previous year. 

Livestock theft remained high last year, at an estimated cost of £2.7m across the UK.
