Investigation launched into farm vehicle death of boy, aged 3
5th August 2021
A tragic farm vehicle death has been reported in Pembrokeshire.
The little boy, who has not been named, was struck by a farm vehicle on a farm Tuesday evening.
A police spokesperson stated: “Dyfed-Powys Police was alerted to a collision involving a vehicle and a child at a private property in the Clynderwen area at approximately 7 pm on Tuesday, 3rd August.
“Sadly, a three-year-old boy died at the scene.
“An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing and the family is being supported by specialist officers.”
The Health and Safety Executive and HM Coroner have been informed. The spokesperson confirmed nobody else was injured.
This deeply saddening incident happens just two weeks after The Farm Safety Foundations’ ‘Farm Safety Week’. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of working safely in farming. The campaign comes shortly after the latest alarming statistics show that farms are still not as safe as they should be;
- Farming continues to have the poorest safety record of any occupation in the UK & Ireland
- Despite accounting for approx. 1.5% of the overall working population in GB, agriculture, forestry and fishing accounts for nearly a quarter of all fatal injuries in the workplace (HSE 2020/2021)
- In Northern Ireland, farming accounted for 5 of the 13 workplace fatalities 2020/2021 representing 38% (HSENI)
- In the Republic of Ireland, farming accounts for 5% of the workforce but an alarming 40% of all workplace fatal incidents
