Scotland backs organic farming with new funding options

Scottish farmers and crofters can now apply for a share of £14 million to convert to organic regardless of land size as the government pushes to double organic land by 2026.
The launch of the Agri-Environment Climate Scheme (AECS) will see 680 Scottish businesses receive funding to reduce their environmental impact and protect nature.
The scheme offers grants for organic farming to help with the two-year conversion process, where land must be farmed to organic standards, but produce cannot be sold as organic. Support will also be available after the conversion period, in recognition of the benefits organic systems deliver.
Applications to AECS opened yesterday (30 January) and will remain open until Wednesday 7 June 2023.
David McKay, head of policy at Soil Association Scotland, said: “With the government looking to double organic farmland and concern for climate breakdown and wildlife declines growing, this is an excellent time for farmers and crofters to consider this change.
“The adjustments to the scheme this year make it a good option for holdings of all sizes to apply, with some of the previous area-based barriers to funding now lifted,” he added.
Prior to the launch of AECS, an area cap of 1,000ha prevented larger holdings from being eligible for organic conversion or maintenance payments on land outside the cap. However, the current round specifies no upper limit for both new applicants and existing contract holders, which means Scottish farms of all shapes and sizes can receive funding.
In addition, organic growers and market gardeners below the 3ha minimum threshold for basic payments can also apply for government cash. Payments of £500 are available for small businesses registered with the Scottish Government’s Rural Payments Division (RPID), which can help cover the annual cost of certification.
Mr McKay from Soil Association Scotland commented: “Challenges to the entire farming sector remain, but it seems certain that both government and consumer support for farming in harmony with nature will continue to increase, and farmers should have confidence in switching to organic.”
