Post-maize grass funding rises to £200 per hectare for south east farmers

Farmers intending to cover their maize fields with grass this winter can now claim £200 per hectare from South East Water.

In an effort to alleviate financial struggles, South East Water has near-doubled its post-maize grass funding for farmers in the region, which has increased from £110 to £200 per hectare. The funding is intended to reduce sediment, pesticide and nutrient input into water sources across the south east.

Applications are open until 31st October and can be made for any grass species sown after harvest. Farmers interested in applying can submit a form at southeastwater.co.uk/maize.

Tom Abbotts, catchment advisor at South East Water, said: “With harvest over, now is the perfect time to think about winter field cover to protect against soil erosion and nutrient leaching.

“We know this has been an extremely challenging growing season with difficult ground conditions for inter-row sowing, but it’s not too late to protect your fields – and local water sources.”

The company’s initiative is part of a series of measures to protect water sources from diffuse pollution prior to the water being abstracted and sent to 2.3 million customers.

Other than its special post-maize grant, South East Water offers funding for a range of on-farm improvements and sustainable land management initiatives. Farmers and landowners in the company’s priority catchment areas can claim up to £20,000 a year for land management costs and infrastructure improvements, as well as free water efficiency audits.

In addition, farmers looking to grow winter cover crops can claim £75 per hectare from the water provider. There is also funding available for inter-row sowing maize with grass (£160/ha) and herbal leys (£280/ha).

“Planning ahead for next spring, inter-row sowing is an excellent way to protect and improve soil on maize fields.

“Allowing grass to establish through summer between the crop reduces soil and nutrient loss whilst reducing the need to travel on wet fields in winter,” explains Mr Abbotts.
