A number of Tesco Express stores will take part in the trial where some remaining food will be available for customers through the tills at no charge.

It is expected to be available after 9.30 pm.

The store, however, explained that the expiring food will be primarily offered to charities, local groups, and staff, before it would gain the ‘for free’ label.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We are constantly looking for innovative new ways to reduce food waste.

“In all our stores we offer unsold surplus food to charities and community groups, donating millions of meals each month.

“This trial, in a small number of our Express stores, will allow customers to take any remaining yellow stickered items for free at the end of the day, after they have first been offered to charities and colleagues.”

Tesco has recently been calling on the government to provide a clear and comprehensive plan to support UK farmers in the transition to net zero as the retailer plans to set up two eco farms to trial low-carbon farming methods.
