West Norfolk auctioneer and valuer Barry L Hawkins dies at age of 86

Norfolk-based family-run business that has been offering a wide range of auction and valuation services since 1850 announced the death of Barry L Hawkins.
Barry L Hawkins died at his home in Downham Market on 2nd December 2024, at the age of 86 after a short illness, local media reported.
His obituary reads that Mr Hawkins was passionate about caring for his clients within the farming community up to his dying days and relished the challenges of dealing with all walks of life with the same respect.
‘Helping clients solve difficult problems and providing extensive knowledge and expertise to many clients, charities, as well as businesses throughout the region.
‘Despite facing personal challenges through his life, including losing his eldest son Thomas and daughter Louise, who both lost their respective battles to cancer, he maintained an infectious enjoyable outlook to life. His maxim to life was to face everything and recover.
‘He thoroughly enjoyed his time as a livestock auctioneer and valuer travelling around rural Norfolk and the surrounding counties and considered most of his clients as friends. He certainly regarded himself as a country auctioneer, and although not an expert, his depth of knowledge was extensive on many aspects through his years of experience.
‘He leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Valerie, and youngest son Marcus, as well as extended family and his staff in Downham Market,’ it continues.
The company, Barry L Hawkins, announced that a memorial thanksgiving service to celebrate Mr Hawkins’ life will be held at St. Peter & St. Paul Church in Swaffham on Friday, 28th February, at 11am.
