3rd October 2024
A farm worker from Cumbria died after getting out of a tractor which then began to move and collided with him, an inquest heard.
Daniel Sowerby tragically died on 11th September following an incident on the B5299 between Boltongate and Snowhill.
The 26-year-old man grew up in Bassenthwaite village but more recently lived in Thursby.
In tribute to him, his family said that Mr Sowerby was a much-loved son, brother and partner.
They added: “Anyone who knew Dan would say he was a cheeky chappy but also a true gentleman.
“He was loving, hardworking and just an all-round delight to be around. His infectious laugh and smile would light up any room.
“He was one of the kindest souls you would ever meet. We speak for everyone when we say he will be well and truly missed, we all love you forever Dan.”
Fatal injuries
An inquest into the farm worker’s death opened at Cockermouth Coroners’ Court on Tuesday, 1st October.
Dr Nicholas Shaw, assistant coroner for Cumbria, outlined some brief circumstances of the tragic incident, by saying: “His death occurred while he was at work.
“He had been working with a tractor and it seems that having alighted from the tractor it began to move, colliding with a wall and also with Daniel. He sustained injuries that proved to be fatal,” local media reported.
The inquest has been now suspended to allow time for an investigation by HSE.
