Why should anyone care that agricultural equipment is manufactured in Britain? Surely it’s just about whether the kit is reliable and does what it says on the tin?

Simon Weaving, sales director at Weaving Machinery, based near Evesham, Worcestershire, would beg to differ.

“Service and back-up, with machines that are suited to UK farming conditions, reflect the many conversations we have with our farmers. This makes the difference. We are in control of everything from design to set up in the field and our farmers have a say every step of the way.”

It’s a formula that has worked for Weaving since the company was founded in 1983. Weaving has always been a family firm and, from the outset, the aim has been to offer farmers the best quality machinery at affordable prices – Built to last in British weather, designed to get the most from British soils and to do the best for British farmers.

In 2020 this commitment remains unchanged, but the business looks very different. Manufacturing capacity has recently expanded to 60,000sq/ft, turnover has doubled every two years over the last decade and Weaving has become a respected manufacturer both in the UK and overseas.

“Farming has changed dramatically over the last 10 years and will undoubtedly continue to do so in the next 10 – only at a faster pace,” continues Simon.  “Our focus on low impact farming has proved well founded and investment in modern design and manufacturing methods have allowed us to maintain our position in the development of the latest zero tillage seeding equipment. We’ve listened to our customers and our equipment now requires less fuel, simplicity delivers less wear and operations can be delivered with lower HP tractors.

“As UK agriculture adjusts to life outside the CAP, our ability to focus on efficiency of production, whilst delivering on wider society goals on the environment and climate change, will stand our industry in good stead. The sector has many of the solutions to address society’s challenges whilst producing food to the highest quality. We see ourselves as playing our part in this.”

Weaving Machinery has always been driven by a simple mantra – precision with simplicity – which flows through every part of the business. “Farmers know exactly where they stand. They know the price of the machines, they know they can call anytime, they know we will provide advice on what will suit their system best. We will look after them. They will always have back-up and the machines they receive will always deliver.”

Weaving prides itself on its personal approach. With many of the team from farming backgrounds, the business understand the needs and requirements of its customers.

A key area that has received significant investment in recent years has been after-sales and parts. Weaving now carries over £3m of parts and their service and parts department continues to grow with all products fully backed up by after-sales support teams and service technicians covering the UK. The comprehensive spare parts department is able to dispatch parts for next day delivery.

Weaving has also invested in its delivery lorries and demonstration tractors. Two new Fendt tractors have arrived ready for this autumn and the team are rightly proud of their ability to arrive on farm with the best kit to ensure customers are never let down.

An area of the business that has grown significantly has been quality used machinery. This is always tested in the workshop prior to sale, providing complete peace of mind. “Our equipment commands some of the best resale prices on the market,” says Simon, “which provides farmers with real choice. Those buying new know that they have a valuable machine when they want to change and those looking to buy used know they have a machine that will continue for many years.”

The business understands that it is not always possible to fund a new machine. It therefore offers various financial options which are easily understood and very competitive, whether on a trade in basis, used or new purchase. In particular, its ‘pay as you use’ approach has proved to be very successful with farmers.
