Further cases of avian flu reported in Suffolk

A new spate of H5N1 outbreaks has been confirmed in Suffolk – near Redgrave and Elmswell.
Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 was confirmed at a premises near Redgrave, Mid Suffolk yesterday (1st March), and in Elmswell, Mid Suffolk over the weekend (26th February).
A 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone is in place around both premises and all birds at the infected premises will be humanely culled.
These latest outbreaks bring the total number of cases to 83 in England – the largest outbreak ever seen in the UK. Six outbreaks have also been reported in Scotland, five in Wales and six in Northern Ireland.
Cases have continued to be reported through February, in the following areas:
- Ledbury, north Herefordshire
- Blaydon, Tyne and Wear
- Welshpool, Powys
- Grimsby, Lincolnshire
- Holy Island, Northumberland
- Bishop’s Waltham, Hampshire.
An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone requiring birds to be housed has been in place since the end of November.
