H5N1 has been confirmed at premises near Kirkham, Lancashire, and South Derbyshire.
The latest cases of avian influenza have been confirmed in commercial poultry at premises near Willington, South Derbyshire, and near Kirkham, Flyde in Lancashire.
Further testing has confirmed the Lancashire case to be a highly pathogenic strain and 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone have been put in place. Testing is underway to determine the pathogenicity of the strain at the Derbyshire premises and 3km and 10km temporary control zones have been put in place.
There have now been nine cases of H5N1 in the UK since 26th October – in Worcestershire; Warwickshire; Essex; North Yorkshire; Derbyshire; Wrexham, Wales; and the Angus constituency – plus two cases in Lancashire.
All have been confirmed as highly pathogenic, except for the recent Derbyshire case which is pending the results of further testing.
An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone is in place across Great Britain, meaning bird keepers are required by law to adhere to strict biosecurity rules, and gatherings of poultry, galliforme or anseriforme birds are banned.
