Jeremy Clarkson talks about his ‘sad’ experience ahead of show’s new season
8th April 2024
Jeremy Clarkson has opened up about his experience of becoming a pig farmer, ahead of the new season of Clarkson’s Farm, set to air in May.
Despite warnings from his land agent Charlie Ireland, Clarkson decided to purchase rare breed Oxford Sandy and Black pigs.
Unfortunately, many of the piglets from the first litter died, with some of them being crushed accidentally by their mothers. The tragedy left everyone on the farm feeling distressed, including Clarkson’s Farm filmmakers.
Sadness instead of happiness
Talking to The Sunday Times, Mr Clarkson said: “I reckoned the pigs would provide something that’s sadly lacking in farming today: a bit of genuine happiness.
“Instead, it was almost unbelievably sad. I’ve never seen Lisa [Hogan, his girlfriend] so upset. The film crew looked shell-shocked.
“We had a catastrophically high level of deaths, and I was desperately worried we were doing something wrong, but it turned out we weren’t, it was just that pigs are bad mothers – the Sandy and Black particularly so. That’s why it’s a rare breed.”
What’s more, the celebrity and farmer admitted that: “Behind-the-scenes, everything that could go wrong has gone wrong”. This includes his potatoes and spring barley being ruined due to the wettest March in many years.
Useful programme
However, Clarkson is not going to give up on his dream of having a thriving farm in the Cotswolds.
He said his show is “an enjoyable way of learning about where your food comes from”.
He added: “Television is rather obsessed with organic and diversity and sustainability, rather than where food actually comes from and the actual people who make it for you.
“I think it’s been a very useful programme for making people go, ‘Bloody hell, you work very hard doing that and earn no money at all.’” Fans of Clarkson’s Farm will not have to wait too long to see the new season.
Amazon Prime Video announced that season three of the show will air on 3rd May 2024.
The streaming and rental service has also confirmed it is preparing season four of Clarkson’s Farm.
