About 400 pigs have been killed following a devastating fire at a farm in East Yorkshire.

About 400 pigs have been killed following a devastating fire at a farm a barn on Riston Road in Catwick in East Yorkshire.

A blaze broke out at a farm barn on Riston Road in Catwick just after 1pm on Sunday, 7th July.

A spokesperson for the Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said the pigs in the barn were fatally injured and the building itself is “completely destroyed”.

It is believed that the cause of the fire was an electrical fault.

Five fire engines were involved in a five-hour operation.

Firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to a neighbouring barn, which suffered smoke damage.

Breathing apparatus, two main lines, a thermal imaging camera and drone were needed to control the blaze.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service has urged farmers to carry out regular electrical safety checks, especially in areas where straw or hay is stored.
