Invest in protecting calves from pneumonia and stunted growth

With inflation rates remaining high and beef farming continuing to struggle as a result, Hydor is urging farmers to invest in tube ventilation systems for calf buildings to prevent pneumonia from causing a loss in yield by stunting growth.
Pneumonia is one of the biggest challenges faced by calf rearers and beef farmers across the nation. Able to spread quickly amongst a herd, the disease can also bring a host of issues with it, including added costs from unexpected vet and medicine bills, as well as extra stress from managing it amongst livestock.
Alongside this, if a calf gets pneumonia, it can impact their feeding and reduce their liveweight gain and final yield, and ultimately, impact on profits. AHDB estimates that affected animals can cost farmers between £30-80, while growth can be stunted by as much as 3-9%.
To prevent pneumonia from taking hold, Hydor recommends that farmers install tube ventilation systems where calves are housed. These solutions will ensure that stale air which can retain bacteria and viruses is continuously replenished with fresh air.
Hydor says its Tube Ventilation System can improve the quality of air within farm buildings by providing a continual airflow to allow fresh air to enter the shed. Causes of respiratory infection, such as condensation and damp, are eliminated quickly and effectively as foul air is diluted.
Meanwhile, the system can be designed so that the fresh air circulates above the animals so as not to cause a chill, which is particularly important for good calf health and animal welfare.
Easy to fit and with low running costs, Hydor says all its products are UK manufactured. For more about Hydor’s Tube Ventilation System, visit https://hydor.co.uk/product/tube-ventilation-system/
