Hereford bull spring sale a success despite poor weather
23rd February 2024
Strong online and ringside bidding saw the day’s top price reach £5,600 at the Hereford bull sale in Southwest Scotland.
Cold wintery conditions did not deter buyers travelling to the far Southwest of Scotland earlier this month, keen to purchase the hardy, unpampered, rising two-year-old bulls on offer from John Douglas and Family at Mains of Airies, Leswalt, Stranraer, which was conducted by C&D Auctions Ltd.
With strong online and ringside bidding, the day’s top price of £5,600 was attained for much admired Ervie L1 Advance 222984 – a light-birthweight bull with good balanced EBV’s from the Noreen family, staying local with Black Baldie breeder, R. Parker, Drumdow.
Next best at £5,400 was Ervie L1 Achiever 223003, selling online to Welsh pedigree Hereford breeders – Messrs Lewis, Anglesley. He came with strong figures high on growth, muscle and maternal and from the L1 Achievement A family with a straight Line 1 Pedigree.
Another online buyer, R.C Shearlaw & Son, High Garphair paid £4,000 for the much fancied Towford L1 Achiever 223115 from the Ervie Unitarian family.
Ervie L1 Achiever 222987 caught the eye of Messrs T McMillan, Eskechraggan, Isle of Bute who went to £3,800. This one from the Achievement H family, with a straight Line 1 Pedigree.
The Aberdeen Angus Bulls on offer created plenty of attention selling to £4,000 on two occasions, firstly for Airies Sholto Y147 purchased by Derbyshire producers D. Sidebottom, Netherwater Farm. Secondly to Messrs March & Lobban, Muncraig, Kirkcudbright for Airies Sholto Y158.
Messrs Reid, Caddell Farm, Saltcoats then paid £3,800 for Airies Sholto Y159.
Prices ranged from £2,200–5,600, 40 bulls averaged £2,835.
