Re-thinking your grassland aeration

With current fertiliser challenges and pressure to increase carbon capture and efficiency on farm, AerWorx offers some fresh advice on aeration of compacted soil.

Re-thinking your grassland aeration

AerWorx is the first and original drum aerator in the UK, engineered to aerate compacted soil and increase yields. The company has supplied aerators within the UK and Europe for the past 15 years and has a full range of machines, suiting all types of applications and markets.

It has machines for all types of agriculture, water companies, events venues, racecourses, amenity grounds, national parks and airports.

Grassland requires the same level of husbandry as arable land. Improved grass growth and soil structure will also improve carbon capture.

When soil is compacted, a ‘hard pan’ forms, helpful soil microbes and earthworms are reduced or eliminated, pastures dry out faster, become water-logged quicker and plant growth is restricted, resulting in lower crop and pasture yields. Grassland aeration has traditionally used conventional lightweight aerators in the spring when the soil is still wet, allowing the machines to penetrate. Rather than the traditional method, AerWorx promotes the heavier aerator; the faster you use the machine, the better the job you will do – speed + weight = kinetic energy.

Grassland management is particularly key with the current pressures of fertiliser use, prices, run-off, waterlogging and the need to produce your final product as efficiently as possible. Treat the soil as a living asset that needs water, oxygen and temperature to thrive, AerWorx advises.

The use of natural fertilisers and improving organic matter is becoming critical to growing productive grassland, which in turn improves carbon capture. But if the soil isn’t in the correct conditions to absorb the natural fertilisers, then it’s irrelevant how much you spread.

All these benefits with aeration give water and nutrients better access to root systems of your forage and can give you earlier turnout times, extended grazing, reduced waterlogging, run-off, water retention and better drought resistance.
