The news comes after four members of his team quit their jobs and called for Mr Gething to do the same.

Mick Antoniw, Julie James, Lesley Griffiths and Jeremy Miles have all quit their cabinet positions.

Last month, Mr Gething lost a vote of no confidence, however, he dismissed the motion as a “gimmick” and vowed to carry on.

He was criticised for accepting donations to his election campaign from a company whose owner has been convicted of environmental offences.

Most challenging time

Vaughan Gething posted on X: ‘I have taken the difficult decision to start the process of stepping down as Prif Weinidog.

‘It has been the honour of my life to do this job, but it has also been the most challenging time, for me, and my family. I have always acted to serve Wales, and that will never stop.’
