North Devon District Council’s motion to turn vegan criticised by farmers

North Devon District Council’s motion to turn vegan received backlash from the local farming community.

North Devon District Council’s motion to switch to 100% plant-based catering received backlash from the local farming community.

Earlier this week, the North Devon District Council debated a motion that would see the council switch to 100% plant-based catering for internal meetings and events with the aim of tackling the climate emergency.

The motion, which also pushed for ingredients to be sourced locally or from food surplus organisations where possible, received backlash from the local farming community.

Some farmers made calls to the council and protested outside the council building, demanding that councillors vote against the idea.

Voted down

Councillors at North Devon District Council have voted down the motion and called for the council to work with local farmers to support their move towards the production of more sustainable plant-based produce.

Following the news, the Countryside Alliance said that the council should instead be focusing on reducing mileage from farm to plate by encouraging local meat and dairy production.
