The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has published analysis of the UK’s trading relationships with non-EU countries and how these are influenced by EU membership.

The ‘Horizon’ article examines existing markets for agricultural products and identifies the challenges for future UK trade. It also looks at the pros and cons of pursuing a restrictive trade policy and what this might mean for the farming sector.

It is the second in a series of articles looking at the potential implications for the agricultural industry of the UK’s decision to leave the EU.

David Swales, AHDB Head of Strategic Insight, said: “We face the dual challenge of extricating ourselves from a highly complex relationship with the EU, which has shaped our trading environment for the last forty years, and establishing ourselves on the world stage as trading nation in our own right.

“This latest article looks at what opportunities are out there and what the different approaches to setting our own trade policy might mean for food and farming businesses.”

Further pieces of analysis will be released on a range of topics in the coming weeks, to provide AHDB levy payers with a bank of independent resources on key questions raised by the referendum result.

AHDB information on the implications of the EU referendum can be found on the AHDB website at http://www.ahdb.org.uk/news/EUReferendum.aspx
