Monitoring poultry shed conditions in real-time

Welfare and food production standards require poultry housing conditions to be closely monitored through routine checks. These routine checks throughout the day quickly add up, so the ability to do this virtually, via tablet or phone, could make significant time and cost savings.

Now, thanks to Glas Data and Eggbase, the poultry sensors collect real-time data which can be viewed quickly and easily on phone, tablet or PC.

The sensors notify egg producers, pullet rearers and broiler growers to potential issues with their housing conditions through real-time alerts. With the new technology, critical aspects of poultry housing can be monitored from temperature and humidity to sound and ammonia levels.

High ammonia levels within poultry housing can cause serious issues with flock health. If birds are exposed to high concentrations for too long, it can cause respiratory damage and lead to ammonia blindness in pullets. By receiving a real-time alert of ammonia levels, ventilation can be quickly adjusted to tackle the issue before it causes problems.

Water, electricity and feed usage can also be monitored.

Cutting edge technology for optimising production

The Smart Poultry Sensors work over a long-range through a wireless network called the Internet of Things (IoT). They provide real-time monitoring for various locations across a farm and use LoRaWAN (long-range, low power) technology, which enables data to be collected from remote locations.

“With their ability to work over a long-range, these sensors are perfect for monitoring egg and poultry businesses. The sensors are low-maintenance and have a long battery life. Depending on the use and amount of data they collect, batteries can last several years,” says Colin Phillipson.

Three Smart Poultry Sensor packages have been developed, which all come with access to the GlasCore dashboard and real-time alerts.

The basic package includes sensors to monitor temperature, humidity, light, sound, carbon dioxide and a water meter pulse counter. The comprehensive package includes the same as the basic package, along with a differential air pressure switch, electrical power monitor and weight sensor for feed silos. A bespoke package is also available, which allows the poultry business to choose exactly which sensors it requires.
