Check state of your soil in just minutes with PES Technologies’ latest device

As the global agricultural industry grapples with the need to produce more food while protecting natural resources, maintaining soil health is essential not only for environmental conservation but also for long-term food security, said experts at PES Technologies while introducing device to control soil health.

Maintaining soil health is essential said experts at PES Technologies while introducing device to control soil health.
PES Technologies’ latest device delivers real-time in-field soil health data.

In the pursuit of sustainable agriculture, soil health has never been more critical. Healthy soils are the foundation of productive farming, playing a pivotal role in supporting crop growth, improving water retention, and even helping to sequester carbon, the PES Technologies team added.

PES offers a hand-held, smartphone-controlled device that delivers real-time in-field soil health data. This is an innovative breakthrough in agritech that is transforming how farmers and land managers approach soil health, the company added.

Unlike traditional methods of soil testing that can be slow and expensive, PES Technologies provides immediate insights into the state of your soil in just minutes, the manufacturer said.

The device measures 12+ key indicators of soil quality, including critical metrics such as microbial biomass, organic matter, pH levels, and more.

This comprehensive, on-the-spot data empowers users to make informed decisions about soil management, enabling them to optimise soil health, enhance crop productivity, and promote sustainable farming practices.

Technology for precision agriculture

PES Technologies added that its soil health tool stands out due to its innovative approach to data collection.

The device works by assessing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by the microbial communities within the soil. Microbial activity is a crucial indicator of soil health, as microbes play a key role in breaking down organic matter and cycling nutrients.

Once these VOCs are detected and measured, the data is processed through PES’s machine learning algorithm, which delivers soil health insights directly to the PES app on your smartphone.

The benefits of this technology extend beyond real-time feedback, the manufacturer said.

All data collected by the PES device is GPS-tagged, allowing users to return to the exact same location for ongoing monitoring and comparison over time.

This feature enables farmers, agronomists, and land managers to track improvements or changes in soil health, providing a clear picture of how different management practices impact soil quality. The data can be easily exported as PDFs or CSV files, making it simple to share insights and integrate the information into broader farm management systems.

Following the commercial launch this year, PES Technologies has delivered its first round of units to agronomists, farmers and land managers across England.

Industry recognition and global potential

PES Technologies has gained industry recognition for its groundbreaking work in soil health analysis.

The company was honoured with the prestigious 2024 Innovation Excellence Award by the Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC).

The FPC judges praised PES Technologies, calling it “a highly innovative product with the potential to be a global game-changer. PES is putting growers at the cutting edge of environmentally sustainable farming practices by enabling agronomic decision-making in the field based on real-time soil insights”.

This recognition underscores the transformative impact PES Technologies is poised to have on the global agricultural landscape. By making real-time, precise soil health data accessible and easy to use, PES is helping farmers transition from reactive to proactive soil management.
