Gatemaster showcases latest solutions for gate security on farms

Security on farms is an essential part of modern agricultural operations, ensuring the protection of valuable assets, livestock, crops from theft, vandalism and other potential threats, said manufacturer Gatemaster.

Gatemaster, which has been designing and manufacturing security hardware to protect farms, showcased solutions for gate security.

Gatemaster, which has been designing and manufacturing security hardware for 30 years to protect properties such as farms, added that as rural crime rates continue to rise, and implementing comprehensive security measures becomes “increasingly vital” for farm owners.

A company’s spokesperson said: “Where problems with chains, padlocks, and hook and eye hinges arise, Gatemaster finds innovative and inexpensive solutions.

“The company aims to supply high-quality products that will ensure safety and protection for a long time to come.

“Gatemaster provides a range of gate locks that are durable, robust and fit for purpose that are easy to install, and with no power needed, are perfect for rural settings.”

Remedy for farm thefts

The Gatemaster expert said that if you are using ‘hook and eye’ hinges, you are certainly in the majority.

They added: “This hinge has always been incredibly popular in the UK amongst gate professionals because it is simple, reliable and does the job.

“Unfortunately, such a simple hinge does not offer a lot of security: with a loose fit, your gate can be manoeuvred off your post with no additional tools.

“Every year, a few articles are published in local press, warning farmers and properties about another series of thefts.

“The remedy for this problem is the push-fit security collar. It is simply pushed on to the hook of the hinge and it serves as a cap.

“The collar functions similarly to a zip-tie: when pushed down, it is impossible to move it up again. Therefore, no fasteners, glues or similar are used, and the collar can be installed on your hook and eye hinges in mere seconds.”

As the collar is available in sizes 12mm, 16mm, 19mm and 22mm in diameter, it can be used for most, if not all, hook and eye hinges for both new and existing installations.

Cost-effective game changer

The Gatemaster team said that the company has found increased demand for its hook and eye security collars year on year.

The company explained that the solution is a simple, yet very effective way of reducing the chance of your gates /doors being stolen.

Dale from the Gatemaster sales team said: “The amount of gates I have seen with a heavy chain or just a padlock to prevent access yet can be lifted of the hinges in seconds. This has become a cost-effective game changer for many of our customers.”

Another way to increase security is to make sure your gate is going to be closed.

Gates that are left open are not only a security or safety risk. An uncontrolled, open gate blowing open and closed in the wind can damage the gate hardware and the gate frame itself.

A Gatemaster spokesperson added: “The best way to avoid this is of course to ensure the gate is closed every single time after use. But we all know it isn’t enough to put a sign up saying ‘Please close the gate behind you’. That is when gate closers come into practice.

“A controlled gate closer offers a way to close the gate in a dampened way. Although there are non-controlled gate closers available and commonly used, such as spring-assisted closers, the safest way to make your gate close automatically would be to use a controlled gate closer, such as a gas strut.

Find out more about gate closers. As a bonus tip, to help the gate close, we also recommend you use an auto-latching lock.

“This will make sure your gate latches every time, which means fewer open gates and therefore fewer chances of opportunistic thefts. An open gate defeats the purpose of having a gate at all.”
