Sunny spell progresses harvest 2024

Farmers around the UK have taken to the fields during the recent warm and sunny weather, to progress harvest in both barley and oilseed rape, as well as making a start on winter wheat.

Farmers from around the UK have been very busy for the last weeks, as they are using sunny weather to get harvest jobs done.

Windsor and Maidenhead farmer Colin Rayner has just started the winter wheat harvest at Home Farm in Laleham, Surrey.

He said: “Skyfall wheat at 14% moisture. Good bushel weight and a clean sample. The yield looks useful.

“I am so pleased that the wheat is coming in dry. The straw being bailed tonight by my friends at Cappagh.”

Buckinghamshire

Richard Heady of Headys Farm started harvesting his winter barley on 19th July.

He said: “Yield and quality look ok considering the winter we had, probably the best crop we have this year.

“Even though rain stopped barley harvest for a day, there is still plenty to do, such as spraying, combine maintenance, straw.”

On 29th July, Mr Heady started the straw harvest. He added: “We have been struggling with our round baler, as it keeps kicking out bales that are only half wrapped.

“We have also made little conventional bales, which are a killer to stack in this heat. At least we now only do 700, not many thousands.”

He said: “First day in my OSR, and the sun was shining. Best field of a mixed bunch, but going well.

“Moisture between 7 and 14% on the combine. Swaths for baling into 5×4 rounds for the boiler.”
