Sugar beet factories celebrate record-breaking performance during this year’s campaign

British Sugar has confirmed that this year’s campaign is “progressing well”, with over 2.5 million tonnes of sugar beet having already been processed.
One of the British Sugar factories, the Bury St Edmunds plant, has achieved its best-ever weekly average slice rate of 15,894 tonnes per day.
Other factories in Wissington, Cantley and Newark have already processed a total of 2.5 million tonnes of sugar beet, which is about 30% of the expected total for the 2024/25 campaign, Eastern Daily Press reported.
Record-breaking performances
Dan Green, British Sugar’s agriculture director, told Farmers Guide: “All our factories are slicing well, with some record-breaking performances over recent weeks. The beet is flowing in nicely too.
“We’re hearing that yields are quite varied, but there are some good crops and yields out there getting towards the 100t/ha mark, which is great news.”
Mr Green confirmed that sugar content has crept up to around 17% over the last few weeks.
