Mr Green said that the sugar beet campaign “continues to progress well”, with over two million tonnes of sugar beet now sliced across our four factories.

He added: “We opened our first two factories in mid-September, and early wet weather made harvesting conditions difficult, however over recent weeks we’ve had some near-perfect harvesting conditions.

“Factories are running well, and sugar content looks to be as expected at this point in the campaign.”

Plans for new drier submitted

Recently a planning application has been submitted to build a new beet drier at the Wissington plant.

The new sugar beet drier would allow steam produced elsewhere on the site to be used to dry leftover beet pulp to make animal feed.

The same process is currently carried out using gas burners to heat the beet.

British Sugar explained that using steam would save 50,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year.
