New end dates for sugar beet campaign announced

British Sugar has just released new end dates for each of its factory sites, extending the deadline for farmers whose beet is still in the ground.

British Sugar has just announced new end dates for each of its factory sites, extending the deadline for farmers whose beet is still in the ground.

The company’s agriculture director, Dan Green, said that following the recent wet weather and feedback from growers, British Sugar’s expected campaign end dates for each site will be extended.

The latest end dates announced are:

  • Bury St Edmunds: 8th March
  • Wissington: 15th March
  • Cantley and Newark: w/c 1 April

Beet still in the ground

Mr Green added: “These dates are dependent upon the volume of crop received. We estimate that there is approximately 10% of sugar beet still to be lifted for this campaign.

“Looking ahead to the 2024-25 sugar beet campaign, we are expecting the sowing of seed to take place over the coming weeks, although this is reliant on dry weather. Soil saturation is impacting the ground conditions and we will monitor this closely with our growers.”
