British Sugar said the current estimate suggests that this year’s campaign at the East Anglian sites be completed by the end of February. The Newark site is expected to finish in mid-March.

Its spokesperson added: “All our factories have performed well over the last two months, delivering a consistent throughput, despite a few engineering challenges at each site.

“We’ve seen a recent turn in the weather, with heavy rain, snow and frost in various areas. Whilst we don’t believe we will see a significant impact, we’re continuing to monitor the situation, and we would encourage you to inspect crops too, particularly those still to be harvested.

“Weather data has identified some local ‘cold’ spots, and we have included them on a map, along with some guidance on prioritising crops for the remainder of campaign here.”

Campaign marks ‘usual ups and downs’

British Sugar added that at this point in time, there is still no decision from Defra on the emergency authorisation application for Cruiser SB.

“We’ll get in touch as soon as we hear the outcome. The good news is that the continued outlook for this week is cold and dry, which will help reduce aphid populations ahead of the spring.

“If you’re growing sugar beet for us again this year, we’re pleased to tell you that we’ve been busy recruiting over the last six months to make sure you all have a dedicated British Sugar Agriculture Manager, and we now have a full team in place.

“You’ll be hearing from them shortly as they’ll be getting in touch to discuss your plans for the 2025/26 crop,” a spokesperson for British Sugar added.

The sugar processor said that the 2024/25 campaign has seen the usual ups and downs.

“But so far, so good, and I’d like to thank everyone in our supply chain for all their efforts in getting us to this point.

“We hope you have all managed to get some downtime over the last few weeks and as we push on into 2025, are looking forward to seeing this campaign coming to a safe and successful close,” British Sugar concluded.
