National Potato Day: Biostimulants protect yields and improve soil health as global potato demand soars

Market data sourced from Mordor Intelligence predicts that the potato market will grow to a staggering $137 billion (over £105 billion) by 2029.

School of Agricultural Sciences in Brazil predicts that the potato market will grow to a staggering 7 billion (over £105 billion) by 2029.

Meanwhile, potato farmers throughout Europe continue to endure challenging weather patterns that are disrupting the growing season and delaying planting.

The researchers said that as farmers prepare to meet growing demand, ensuring a steady and resilient supply chain is more critical than ever.

Biostimulants’ potential to protect potato crop yields

A recent field trial conducted by Brazil’s Faculdade de Ciências Agronomicas (FCA) has shown promising results in using biostimulants to support potato growth.

The data underscores the significant potential of seaweed-based biostimulants in transforming potato farming and boosting crop yields, the researchers said.

In particular, the trial revealed that biostimulants developed by Acadian Plant Health led to a 4.6 ton per hectare yield increase, which is the highest among all tested inputs.

The scientists added that Acadian’s biostimulants were found to enhance tuber growth and improve nutrient uptake and water use efficiency.

Positive impact of biostimulants extend beyond crops to soil

Biostimulants have also been found to positively influence soil microbes and their interactions, creating a more conducive environment for crop growth.

Furthermore, biostimulants build resiliency in crops against abiotic stressors like drought, critical in the face of the increasing threat of climate change, the researchers confirmed.

Acadian Plant Health said it is at the “forefront of biostimulant technology research and solutions”.

They added: “Our biostimulant technology is being used in over 80 countries worldwide to meet agricultural needs in areas of performance and sustainability.

“The FCA field trial is just a glimpse into the enormous potential of biostimulants.

“As research progresses and more data emerges, it’s clear that these products are set to play a pivotal role in the future of potato farming.”
