Harvest Results: OSR yields just below the four-year average
16th September 2019
Average treated gross output value of OSR control varieties is 5.22t/ha, which is just below the four-year average value of 5.27t/ha.
Winter oilseed rape yield results are now available for 11 trial sites – Hereford, Kent, Norfolk, Northumberland, North Yorkshire, Warwickshire, Scottish Borders, Midlothian, Fife and Suffolk (x2), reports AHDB.
The average treated gross output value of the control varieties is 5.22t/ha, which is just below the four-year average value of 5.27t/ha. Results from individual trial sites should not be used to make conclusions on variety performance. This is especially true for winter oilseed rape, as performance tends to be more variable than cereals. The AHDB Recommended List publication, which is based on results from several seasons, provides the best indication of variety performance.
To date, the conventional varieties Aspire (108%) and Ballad (105%), and the restored hybrid varieties DK Expansion (105%), Architect (105%) and Crome (105%) have performed well. These varieties have UK recommendations (for both the East/West and North regions), with Architect having a specific recommendation for resistance to Turnip Yellows Virus (TuYV). Aspire also has resistance to TuYV, while Crome has a UK specific recommendation for resistance to clubroot.
2016–19 (four-year) averages
When looking at Harvest Results, the over-trials and over-years averages (based on four harvest years: 2016–19) provide good information for comparison between varieties. Based on the four-year average values, the highest-yielding varieties to date are Aspire (106%), Ballad (104%), DK Expansion (103%) and Crome (103%). Crome has a UK specific recommendation for resistance to clubroot. In addition to Aspire, varieties with TuYV resistance have gross outputs of 101% (Temptation) and 100% (Architect). PT279CL, which has a UK specific recommendation for tolerance to specific imidazolinone herbicides (a Clearfield© variety), has a gross output of 95%.
Gross output values for the Candidate varieties, based on the four-year averages, currently show that the conventional varieties Acacia (109%) and Aardvark (105%), and the restored hybrid varieties Aurelia (107%), Ambassador (107%) and Artemis (106%), have performed well, reports AHDB.
