28th November 2024
NFU president Tom Bradshaw met with the Prime Minister to discuss the impact of changes to inheritance tax reliefs.
Mr Bradshaw confirmed that the meeting took place on Monday, 25th November, and was arranged by PM Keir Starmer’s office.
While the details of private meetings must remain confidential, he said that the impact of changes to inheritance tax on farms was discussed, alongside a number of other topics including food security, trade and farming and growing in the UK more widely.
Mr Bradshaw added: “I welcome the Prime Minister asking to hear directly about farmers’ concerns, and I am grateful to him for taking the time to do so. I hope we can work together towards a resolution on this issue.”

Constructive conversation
A Downing Street spokesperson said that the PM and the NFU president had a “wide-ranging conversation” in which PM Starmer recognised the strength of feeling about the changes to Agricultural Property Relief set out in the Budget and listened to the NFU’s concerns.
They continued: “In the meeting, they discussed the government’s commitment to solidly protecting the interests of British farmers, including in trade negotiations and in public sector procurement, as well as working together to ensure Environmental Land Management Schemes deliver for farmers.
“We will always meet with key stakeholders to hear their views, as that’s what a serious, grown-up government does. While we stand by the changes we have set out, the Prime Minister took the opportunity to have a constructive conversation with Mr Bradshaw and discuss how they can work together to support British farmers.”
