The demonstration was organised by Farmers’ Movement Cornwall. Protesters gathered at Victoria Square in Truro at midday on Saturday 23rd November.

Peter Lawrence of Farmers Movement Cornwall said during the rally: “We are in a mess, and we need to sort it out very quickly.

“We want to make the public and government aware of our concerns regarding food security.

“We shouldn’t be so heavily reliant on imports, we should be more self-sufficient and agricultural policy should change to ensure maximum agricultural self-sufficiency.

“The inheritance tax issue is very important and has triggered a lot of concern amongst the farming community.

“Farmers are very concerned and it certainly is one of the issues that sparked the protest today.”

London rally

Last week, thousands of farmers hit London streets to also rally against the changes to family farm tax.

Farmer and TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson also took part in the protest.

He told the crowd: “For the sake of everybody here, and for all the farmers who are stuck at home today, paralysed by a fog of despair over what’s been forced upon them, I beg of the government to be big, to accept that this was rushed through, it wasn’t thought out and it’s a mistake.

“That’s the big thing to do. Admit it and back down.”

Following NFU’s mass lobby on 19th November, the union confirmed that more than 260,000 people have backed its campaign to reverse the family farm tax, signalling to the government that the public disagrees with the “cruel and ill-thought-out” policy.
