Workers to strike again at New Holland tractor factory

Over 500 CNH workers at the Basildon factory will continue to strike throughout June, after attempts to resolve a pay dispute failed.

New Holland tractors on the production line

Workers at the Basildon factory that produces New Holland tractors took 10 days of strike action in May over a pay dispute. The trade union Unite has confirmed a further 12 dates this month.

The dispute is over an agreement signed in 2022 that pay increases would be calculated by the average rate of inflation over the previous year.

CNH offered a 4% increase for 2024, rather than the 7.4% expected, Unite said.

CNH has said it has a revised offer but, according to Unite, will only table it if the union agrees to recommend the unseen deal to its members.

Disappointed over talks failure

Commenting on the second strike at the New Holland factory, a CNH spokesperson said:

“CNH is in negotiations with the Unite Trade Union representing employees based at the company’s manufacturing site in Basildon, Essex.

“Following a ballot of its members, the Union has informed the company that the workforce has voted in favour of both Industrial Action Short of Strike Action and for Strike Action.”

“The Union has also informed the company of the dates on which it intends to hold strikes. The company is disappointed that the parties were unable to reach an agreement and that the Unite Union has decided on this course of action.

“We recognise the Union’s decision creates high anxiety among our represented employees in Basildon, as well as our other employees, our customers, and our community. During this period, we foresee no disruption to tractor supply.

“The company remains committed to reaching an agreement, and we are keen to work with the Union to resolve this situation in a timely manner. We will continue to negotiate in good faith and trust that the Union will do the same.”

Fresh strike action will take place on 4th, 5th, 6th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 25th, 26th and 27th June.
