Why should I grow one of NPZ’s OSR varieties?

NPZ UK varieties offer farmers an opportunity to mitigate their risk against common oilseed rape diseases thanks to strong LLS resistance, RlmS and Rlm7 major phoma resistance genes and strong verticillium tolerance. This is proven by their consistency in trial both official and field scale.

Having RlmS phoma resistance in our varieties gives growers chance to mitigate phoma disease risk where there is a clear break down of Rlm7 occurring in the UK, and the healthy plants in the late spring mean they’re building yield and oil content all the way until harvest. Selecting varieties with strong vigour under high pressure situations in the UK means they’re adept at growing away from pests both in the autumn and spring.

NPZ UK talks about late sowing – why should I consider this instead of sowing at the end of July?

NPZ UK is working with Dr Ute Kropf from Kiel University to look at late sowing. Dr Kropf will be on the company’s stand on the first day of Cereals to give two talks on OSR physiology and late sowing. However – essentially data suggests early drilled crops have more accumulated temperature before winter than they require as a crop. This is leading to large crops which are seeing stem extension in November/December; the physiology of oilseed rape means that at the stem extension stage it has already developed its branching and pod potential, which it traditionally does over the winter period when the crop looks to be dormant. From the point of green bud, the plant only loses yield potential.

Growing high vigour varieties after the major beetle migration on NPZ UK’s sites in Cambridge and Wisbech left plenty of accumulated temperature to get to the desired growth stage before plants shut down for winter. This is an ongoing project and not necessarily the silver bullet for growing high yielding OSR crops, but data suggests that there’s a good chance significant yield is being lost because of earlier drilling.

Should I grow a clubroot variety in case clubroot infects my soil?

Clubroot resistance comes from a limited number of resistances; that means there is potential to overcome them and lose the efficacy of the resistance strains we have.

NPZ UK suggests using cultural controls such as liming, widening rotations and testing soil if you believe there is a problem.

Clubroot is often found first in wet areas or gateways where it could be mistaken for a poorer area of crop. However, testing these areas is important, then once following the cultural control advice – using a clubroot variety such as Crome or Crusoe will help to keep OSR in the rotation.
