Livestock farmers invited to British Pig & Poultry Fair next week
10th May 2024
Livestock farmers have been invited to attend the British Pig & Poultry Fair next week. This free event offers a two-day packed event of forums, networking, expert advice and new products.
The British Pig & Poultry Fair takes place on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th May at NEC in Birmingham.
The organisers said that, as ever, the fair will feature its bespoke Poultry and Pig Theatres, which bring together great speakers to explore the hot topics of the day.
The popular Pig, Egg, and Poultry Outlooks will help farmers find out what challenges and opportunities lie ahead. The participants are also encouraged to quiz the speakers for their top tips on how to manage these for optimum success.
This year’s event will see a new Innovation Theatre, which is set to showcase the latest cutting-edge products and ideas.
Defra farming minister Mark Spencer will officially open the event on 15th May. He will also be ready to answer questions in regards to government policy ahead of the upcoming election.
Innovative products
This year, exhibitors will be unveiling more than 60 new products to the market, from red LED lighting to calm birds and boost egg production, to a chick gel that provides quick hydration, energy and gut protection for day-old chicks.
Farrowing sows and breeding boars might appreciate new cooling mats to combat heat stress, while a new herbal extract can be added to pig and poultry feed to enhance appetite, block pathogens and diminish ammonia odours.
Altogether, 336 exhibitors will gather at the fair to provide the latest advice and help participants find out how scientific research is filtering through to benefit farm productivity.
The fair organiser, Alice Bell, said: “This year we have a great mixture of practical advice and blue-sky thinking in what is a constantly evolving sector, and from which visitors are sure to take ideas to implement at home.”
Great meet-up space
The fair hopes to bring together around 7,500 visitors from across the pig and poultry sectors, offering the best networking opportunity.
The organisers said that the event is a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new acquaintances, while discussing the hot topics of the day and sharing personal solutions.
Two key topics are reaching the next generation, both from a marketing and a farm labour perspective, and that is something visitors will be able to explore.
Roz Reynolds of AHDB said that Generation Z responds to authentic and peer-to-peer messaging, which farmers are well-placed to deliver.
She added: “Farmers talking about their stories, particularly around animal welfare and sustainability, is really powerful, so we’re always looking for more people to get involved.”
Sustainable answers
The British Pig & Poultry Fair organisers added that farmers are now under pressure to improve sustainability, whether that is environmental, financial or social.
The idea of a circular economy, which answers all of these conundrums, is growing in both popularity and practicality.
Danny Johnson, general manager at the fair partner ABN, said: “Sustainability, in every way, is vital to every farming business and throughout the supply chain.
“Businesses have to be profitable as well as environmentally and socially sustainable – and bringing together innovative technologies, the latest research, and best practice advice is key to achieving that.”
