Over 130,000 school children register for the NFU Harvest Live

More than 130,000 students will experience harvest time first-hand as the NFU education team takes them behind the scenes of the UK’s biggest harvest festival.

Harvest Live, one of the biggest annual events of the farming industry, will take place on Thursday 29th and Friday 30th September 2022. Pupils taking part will have the opportunity to learn all about seasonality and how the food they eat is grown.

Almost 1,800 primary schools have signed up for the free virtual lessons, through which teachers will educate children about food production and how farmers are using science and technology to tackle climate change. All lessons will link in with the school curriculum through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).

Children taking part in the key stage 1 session will meet NFU student and young farmer ambassador Hannah Buisman, who will explain what happens during a cereals harvest. They will also join children from across the globe in making the world’s biggest combine harvester.

Meanwhile, key stage 2 children will discover how British carrots are grown, processed and packaged before they land on supermarket shelves. What’s more, they will gain an exclusive insight into how farmers fight climate change using science and state-of-the-art technology.

The key stage 2 and 1 sessions of Harvest Live will take place on 29th and 30th September, respectively.

NFU president Minette Batters was impressed by the number of students taking part in the festival this year: “It’s fantastic to see such a large number of schools and children with a keen appetite to learn more about where their food comes from and connecting them with the countryside; our farmed working landscape.

“Being able to show in the classroom how innovative, diverse and exciting an industry agriculture is in such a practical way gives students an amazing insight and could inspire them to think about a career in food and farming in the future.”
