Slurry application: Towing or carrying the weight?
6th July 2022
As well as using the correct applicator for the job, application timing is crucial to ensure maximum nutrient availability for field crops during the growing season.
In the past year the application window was often shorter than we would like, Ploeger says, meaning dedicated application machinery is needed. With a self-propelled unit, the weight of the slurry is not towed behind, but carried by the machine, meaning increased efficiency in traction of the machine, widening the application window.
The graph shows the difference between carrying and towing the weight of slurry. Most interesting is the curved line, which represents the maximum traction that can be generated, based on the wheel load and tyre specifications. The self-propelled slurry applicator is carrying all the weight on driven wheels, and is therefore always able to generate enough traction to propel the machine. As the curve shows, there is even plenty of traction available to pull an implement such as a disc cultivator to preserve nutrients in the soil.
