North Yorkshire-based security firm Cubtech was launched just over a year ago after business owner Lee Turner moved to the village of Slingsby and learned from local farmers about the high level of rural crime the industry faces.
Using his previous experience in high-tech cameras, he started the business, which now not only tackles farm thefts and other crimes, but also allows farmers to check their animals remotely during calving, lambing and foaling.
Farm machinery, tractors, quad bikes, tools, handsaws, chainsaws and cordless drills are all major targets for thieves, as is emptying fuel tanks, Lee says.
Cubtech supply state-of-the-art pan tilt zoom cameras with 360-degree coverage and over 100m night vision, offering clarity with highly powered lenses. Lee says he recognises that internet connectivity can be a significant problem on farms, so the company installs the cameras, recorder and 4G antennas, giving clients super-fast broadband.
New Acusense cameras provide flashing lights, sirens and messages. They are able to identify humans and automatically send a notification to the farmer’s phone, tablet or laptop. They can also draw an invisible line from A to B, which, if crossed, sends a message to the farmer.
Lee says his order book is filling up as more farmers consider bolstering their security, and the company is set to launch new movement sensors. An alarm system is attached to sheds, workshops or stables, and the sensors can be attached to machinery, tools or any other items, so if they are moved without authorisation, the alarm system will be triggered.
