SesVanderHave welcomes BBRO harvest data to aid variety selection
27th February 2025
The release of data from the 2024 sugar beet harvest by the British Beet Research Organisation has been welcomed by breeders SesVanderHave UK.
SesVanderHave UK’s director, Ian Munnery, explained that the latest harvest data gives added information to help growers select the best varieties to sow in their location this spring.
He said: “It is encouraging to see three of our varieties – Antler, Gadwall and Hoopoe – all recommended. This confirms the excellent performance we have seen in three years of APHA trials.”
Aslan, bred by Hilleshog and marketed by SesVanderHave UK, has also gained the recommended status.
Growers able to access new varieties and treatments
Mr Munnery said: “Antler is yielding as high as the previous number one, but with higher sugar content and lower bolting.
“Hoopoe has joined the list for its outstanding performance under the threat of Beet Cyst Nematode. While for those growers facing the challenge of Aypr rhizomania, our variety Osprey is the only recommended variety.”
Many growers will acknowledge this aligns with their own farm experience from trialling these varieties.
The welcome changes, introduced last year by NFU Sugar and British Sugar, now allow growers to access new varieties and treatments earlier and directly from the breeder.
SesVanderHave added that while all the varieties have proven popular, the company still has some stocks available for anybody needing some more seed for drilling this spring.
